A lot of times I see things on the wire when I'm laying out the newspaper that I really want to share. Usually, I can get them printed but I also usually talk about them here. Remember the Atari landfill discovery? This is kind of like that.
If you get the Telegraph, you can find this story on page B4. If you aren't from Nebraska, you can check out the full story here as well. Or you can sit tight while I summarize and commentate!
Yesterday I came across something that was already awesome on the surface, but turned out to be even cooler (i.e. geekier) the more I looked into it. There is a recent story about the U.S. military's special ops working on a new combat suit. The media is calling it an "Iron Man" suit, and that's what caught my eye. Problem is I don't think it looks even remotely like Iron Man. But it is extremely familiar...
Is it just me, or does this design vastly resemble the Spartan armor from Microsoft's Halo series?
But it gets better. We've got the Marvel angle, the Halo angle - let's throw in another incredible (but somewhat veiled) video game reference. According to the story, the people working on the suit have dubbed it the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit - shortened to TALOS. Yes, the man-god from the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim video game. I know. I flipped out a bit too.
Are they doing all this on purpose? I don't know. But it's amazingly clever and it makes me happy to speculate that some of the nation's biggest nerds are also the people working on bettering our military. Now if I can just convince them to start calling these operators "devicers" like the Knightmare pilots in Code Geass...
I know it's short, but I think that's all for today. I do have some neat ideas planned in the upcoming months, and if I can ever find the time and motivation to get my vacation photos up here, you guys can read about my trips to Disney World and London. Until then, I'll see you guys back here Monday-ish for a new review. Thanks for reading! Bye!
