My friend Mikayla first lent me the manga and after I got a little bit in, I also borrowed the anime. There are only 25 episodes, so I ran through it pretty quickly, but the manga is still being published and I can't get enough of it, so I wanted to review it for you all. I'm going to try to explain the basic plot without giving away any big details or spoilers.
Pandora Hearts begins with a young boy of a noble family, Oz Vessalius, and his best friend and attendant Gilbert. The Vessalius family is one of four Great Duke Households, along with the Nightrays, Rainsworths, and Barmas. But there is a fifth family that is shrouded in shadow - the Baskervilles. During Oz's coming of age ceremony, these mysterious figures accuse him of a dark sin, and send him into the Abyss, a deep and horrible place that was thought to be only a fairy tale. |
So now all of them will work together - Alice seeking her lost memories, Oz trying to figure out what his sin is, and Pandora looking to uncover the truth of 100 years ago.
I made that seem so simple but in fact this story is SUPER complicated. To really understand and enjoy it fully, you need to read the manga. I would advise watching the anime first, because like Soul Eater there is much that happens after the anime ends that you need to see, in which case the manga is absolutely necessary. I've been reading it online, and I'll leave you all a link below to the first page so that you can read it to. Just know that the translations aren't always perfect.
Something else I love about this story are the references to Alice in Wonderland. I'm sure you noticed by now that the characters and plot were influenced by Lewis Carroll's works. I feel like you see this a lot in anime, and while I'm not sure why, I still enjoy the new spins that are put on it. For example, several Chains are named for Wonderland characters - Alice, Mad Hatter, March Hare, and even the Dodo. There are more, but I'll let you see for yourselves.
Well, I'm not sure what else I can tell you all except I hope you give the anime and manga a try, and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I was glad to review an anime for once; I haven't beat any new games recently. But Dana and I are getting better at Don't Starve Together and hope to record some for you all soon! Until then, thanks for stopping by, and I'll see you all next week!
