It's blowing up on Youtube right now. It's taking over Tumblr and Twitter. And it's scarring those who manage to survive it for the rest of their lives. Today I'm reviewing the indie horror Five Nights at Freddy's.
This is a point and click adventure. Meaning that you interact with things using your mouse. You have a set of cameras that you can switch through by clicking each block. To enter and exit camera mode, simply hover over the bar at the bottom of the screen. When not in camera mode, you must watch the two doors on either side of your security room and use the lights above them to check the halls nearest to you. But be careful - you have a limited amount of power, and using the doors, lights, and cameras will drain it. If you run out of power, the game is over.
Here's the catch: you cannot move. Your character never leaves the security room. You can only change your view of things by moving your mouse and switching to and from camera mode. So rather than wander around a map hoping not to run into monsters as is typical to horror games, you can only sit there and wait for these monsters to come to you.
Bonnie and Chica are usually the first to move. And they aren't that big of a problem. Even if they get to your hall, flickering the lights will alert you to their presence and you will have enough time to close the doors before they get in.
I have never played a game that made me so paranoid. Even hours after playing it I will still feel jittery and jumpy. This is a horror experience like no other game. And as terrifying as it is, it is also amazingly fun. I'm not sure why; it just is.
Five Nights at Freddy's is not available through Steam yet, but I have heard it's in the Greenlight process. For now, you can buy and download the game from Desura.com. It's made by a user there called animdude, and can be played as a demo (only two nights) or the full game. If you like having the crap scared out of you from time to time, or on a regular basis, I highly recommend this game.
That's it for this week, readers. I hope you enjoyed two reviews. You will probably see more of that as my work schedule has returned to the original Sunday-and-Monday-off version. Also, September is approaching so I will begin working on my reviews for next month's theme - Showdown September. If you have something you'd like to see face off against its remake - a movie based on a book, an anime adapted from a manga - let me know, and maybe I'll add it to the reviews. Until then, thanks fro reading, and I will see you all again soon!
