The first day mainly consisted of boarding the plane, retrieving our luggage, and dropping off all our stuff at the hotel. Afterwards, my mother and I, with her co-workers Barbara and Karen, walked down to the harbor because we had heard about a ship that took you out on the ocean to go whale watching.
Unfortunately, we missed it, but ended up on a ferry that took us around the harbor instead.
We passed under the bridge that connects San Diego with Coronado. Later in the week I took a boat out to Coronado (more in another post).
This bridge is so tall that all but one of the naval ships can sail right under it. And there are a lot of ships in San Diego. That's because there is a Navy base in the harbor, and some ships come here to retire also.

One of them is the famous USS Midway. It's a self-guided tour/museum, and Karen and Barbara went to see it the next day.
This is literally the biggest boat I have ever seen. I still don't understand how they float on the water and not sink!

In the harbor we saw sailboats, people on jet skis, all sorts of sea birds, and some very lazy sea lions.
Some dolphins also popped up at one point, but they were too quick to get a good picture of. On that day, anyway...

Look! There's me! Haha!
OK, so after the harbor tour on the ferry, we went back to the pier and the shops/restaurants by the bay. There were a bunch of these really cool trees. They were huge and twisty and kids kept climbing up 'em. Others were bent toward the shore by the wind off the water.
There was a statue of a famous scene back in WWII, and a small Bob Hope memorial that replayed audio of his performances for the troops.

We ate dinner at the Fish Market restaurant, and walked along the pier back to the hotel where we saw these yachts. This one was definitely the biggest, but there was also one that had another boat in it, a jet ski, a helicopter, and an inflatable raft. They kinda blew my mind.
